The Statue of Anemogiannis in NafpaktosThe statue of Anemogiannis in Nafpaktos: The statue of Giorgos Anemogiannis is found today on the western rampart near the port of Nafpaktos. Giorgos Anemogiannis (1796-1821) was born in Paxi island and took part in the deliberation of Nafpaktos from the Turks, during the Greek War of Independence. In May 1821, he tried to burn the Turkish fleet, moored in the harbor of Nafpaktos. However, he failed and got captured by the Turks, who killed him in a painful way.

Because of his courage and contribution to the freedom of Greece, Giorgos Anemogiannis is considered a national hero, who gave his life defending his country. Today, the statue in the port of Nafpaktos represents him holding a torch. There is also another statue in his honor in the southern entrance of Gaios harbor in his homeplace, Paxi island.
