According to its rich historical legacy Mesolongi (or Messolonghi) counts on a good number of museums.

History and Arts Museum

One of the best ones is the museum of History and Arts, which is hosted in a two-storey building that dates from 1931. This same building has been used in the past for accommodating the Town Hall of the city. Among its main collections we find ‘The Sortie of Mesolongi ’ by T Vryzakis.
Panagiotis Palamas was famous intellectual who led several movements against the Ottoman occupation. The rooms of this house display scripts, pictures, personal objects, and domestic articles, among others, from the every-day life and the valuated work of Kostis Palamas. It can be found opposite to the house of Trikoupis, and one of its outstanding parts is its front, as it is decorated with domes and a glass porch that make it look quite unique.

There is also a book called “The Museum of Trikoupis family”, which has a lively description of this important location.

The Art Gallery of Christos and Sofia Moschandreou

Another important place in historical terms is the art gallery of Christos and Sofia Moschandreou. The building in which it is hosted, dates from 1835, and the Moschandreou family financed its later renovation entirely.

There are also paintings and copies from scenes of this episode, as well as portraits of Greek chieftains, arms dating from 1826, coins, medals, and reed busts of the five Prime Ministers.

Kostis and Panagiotis Palamas Museum

There is also a museum dedicated to the National poet Kostis Palamas, which is hosted in the house where he lived, where also Panagiotis Palamas, the Patriarch of the family was born in 1722.

Regarding the Spyridon Trikoupis house, it also hosted his son,Charilaos, who was an important politician that occupied the charge of Prime Minister of Mesolongi several times.

Mansion of Trikoupis

This mansion dates from 1840, which might be the oldest building of the city, can be found near the lagoon. It was built by Apostolis and Themistoklis Trikoupis, the uncles of Charilaos. It has two storeys and three balconies.

However, its architecture is characterised by the lack of luxury, a feature that remains untouched until our days.

The Spyridon Trikoupis house was donated to the Municipality by a descendant of this family, after which it started functioning as a museum.

The Folklore Museum

Mesolongi also counts on a Folklore museum, which depends on the no-profit Cultural Association of this city. It was founded in 1996, with the purpose of contributing to the education and development of the population, and for aiding the cultural activities of the city and its surrounding areas.
