Mesolongi Architecture, Greece: The architecture of Mesolongi (or Messolonghi), Sterea

Mesolongi is one of the most valuable Greek cities in historical terms. Fortunately, its legacy remains along the centuries, in many cases reflected by the architectural items.

There are some important buildings whose style tends to be austere, like the house of Lord Byron, which has a small square with his name, built by the Decorative Association of Mesolongi.
The house holds a marble column made by a Professor of the Technical University, dedicated by the students of Athens University in 1924.

This building is the monastery of Agios Simon, located at 8 km from Mesolongi, on the sidelong of Zigos. It dates from 1740 and was built during the Turk domination. It was rebuilt in 1836 and renovated in 1973.

Also a big white cross has been erected on this site in memory of the fallen fighters.

Another good example related to architecture is the Palamas house, in which Panagiotis Palamas, the intellectual that led several uprisings against the Turks, was born in 1722.

The Mesologite poet Kostis Palamas also lived in this house. The most remarkable fact regarding the architecture of this house is its front, which is decorated with domes and a glass porch, making it look different from other mansions.

Although the house was actually destroyed by a blow-up, during 1996 and 1997 a new one was built nearby, which off course is very modest, but holds the possessions and remains of this poet and benefactor.

The following example constitutes a very important remain as well, although in this case its architectural features will sure fulfil the tastes of those who like the great style of the ancient constructions.
building is that it served for sheltering the Greek fighters. After its rebuilding, the monastery of St Simeon was used to host several celebrations.

One of them is the “Ypapanti”, on February 2nd. Regarding the architecture of this place, it hosts a beautiful Byzantine church, whose cells are used for these celebrations.
The use of the dome is a remaining from the Roman style, which was then developed by Byzantine architects, and provides an impressive touch to the constructions.

Those who visit this building can get to the inside and see the exhibits of pictures, scripts, as well as the personal and domestic artefacts of the poet Palamas. Finally, there is another interesting example, although it is related to other type of architecture.

We are talking about the arch stone bridge that connects Mesolongi to the small island of Aetoliko, near the salt-lake of Mesolongi –the biggest in Greece. It is 300 metres long and was built in 1898.
