The main natural attraction of the area is the lagoon, which is divided into three different parts: the lagoons of Kleisova, Mesolongi and Etoliko. There are some inhabited small islands scattered along the lagoons that had an important role in the War of Independence, helping some Greeks to provide the city with supplies during sieges and others to escape from the Turkish army.

Today these lagoons support the economy of the area; except from the salt that is produced, there are vivariums to produce fish, eels and roes. You can visit these vivariums in the daytime with a motorboat; in the evening, you can stroll around near the banks and enjoy the sunset.
