If you like winter, snow, traditional Greek villages and warm coffe houses to snuggle in, then Arachova is one of the best places to be in winter. Arachova is very close to Athens and it is very easy to get there.

Arachovacombines the rock traditional houses, with the many coffee shops, restaurants, night clubs and hotels, in a way that the village keeps its traditional and friendly attitude, even in the cold heart of the winter, when it usually accommodates many tourists. We will never forget that chocolate pie we had in one of these warm and cozy coffee shops in a cold winter evening.

Be sure to visit Arachova after December, so you are able to visit the Parnassos Skiing Center. Skiing center opens in December every year, and is one of the most popular places to be in Greece. It would be a shame to visit Arachova and miss skiing, wouldn't it?

It is a shame that such a beautiful town is not much advertised as a great ski spot in Greece. We discovered Arachova by chance in your site, while we were looking for a weekend place near Athens (we had come in Athens for a conference in December). I searched in some travel guides about Greece and not a word about Arachova!! Anyway, I feel lucky I saw this lovely place. It is like a village actually (which we rarely see nowadays) but gets very crowded in winter because of the ski centre that is closeby. Restaurants cook excellent there and all cafeterias have great views to the mountains. Isn't it nice to drink hot Greek coffee, while outside it is freezing? Ah, yes, dress well because in winter there it is very cold. Forgot to mention that Delphi is very close (about 30 minutes from Arachova by car), so you can visit a famous ancient site, too.

What I enjoyed most in Arachova was the traditional recipes I tasted. There, you will find all kind of pies, from the traditional cheese and vegetable pies to zucchini and meat pies with a lot of spices. Another excellent fish recipe is Brigiani, having haddock and vegetables as its main ingredients. Also definitely try formaella, a kind of cheese that is only made in Arachova. You will love it. When I left, I took some back home and now I am looking in all supermarkets to find it.

From Arachova, I remember the narrow stairs, the views from the cafeterias and the Monastery of Osios Loukas. I usually do not like churches adn monasteries, but this one I loved it! We run at it by chance, while we were driving around the area. It is among greenery and built in great byzantine architecture. I was impressed to know that the Monastery was not dedicated to Apostle Loukas, but to a monk with the same name. People say that his dead body is working miracles... I don't know...

Arachova is a mostly known because of the Parnassos Ski Centre. We go there very often in winter because my son is a skier and takes part in championships. It is a picturesque town with beautiful houses and many sights to see. It is easy to go to Delphi from Arachova and to many nice monasteries. The monstery of Osios Loukas is my favourite. I love its shape.

Visiting a very good Greek friend of mine in Athens last winter, we decided to go to for a day trip to Arachova for skiing. We arrived there by car, it lasted only about two hours and the trip to the mountain Parnassos was really fun. I was so excited when I first saw the village, it is beautiful with all these traditional houses and little roads climbing on the mountain slop! It was full of people, the main road was crowded by cars and visitors, as it was December and high-season. We had a great time on the snow, all the winter sports are available and a very good equipment. Afterwards we were so hungry, we went to a tavern and had this delicious dish 'kontosouvli', grilled meat. I recommend also to try one of these traditional sweets with syroup that you will find in sweetshops along the main road - really tempting! One thing I found annoying was the traffic in the getting in and out of the village and the car parcking was difficult, too, but I thing the place is worth a visit.

I really love Arachova. I know this place since my childhood as my parents were taking me for skiing there.
The little village is really beautiful. Is is built with stone houses and has a really great atmosphere. The village is known as the winter's Mykonos as it is very cosmopolitan and have many bars and clubs. The area attracts many rich people and also many wana look rich. It is really funny. I never saw so many 4x4 Jeeps in the same area.
The village has also some great restaurant with tastes different that what can be found in other area.

The Ski Station is located just a few kilometres from there on the Mont Parnassos. The mont Parnassos is a really beautiful mountain with a lot of vegetation. I like the road that takes you there. The Ski Station there is considered to be the biggest of Greece. But it is actually very small compared to Alpes's station. But it is very good for an escape from busy Athens. The only thing is that it is really crowded during week ends and the bar is very noise with stupid music all day long. I guess people like that as it is the same thing for many years now.
