A predominantly Orthodox Society ensures that the entire island of Skyros is covered with numerous churches. With nearly 300 churches scattered around the island, it is difficult to leave the island without getting influenced by the religious aura of Greece.

One church that certainly deserves a special mention lies at the northern end of Magazia, a short walk from the town of Skyros. Built from the stone quarried from that area, it is an architectural masterpiece.

The monastery of Agios Georgios, the patron saint of the island, is also a very significant monument, which has stood through the harsh tests of time.
It is a beautifully preserved structure that was built around 962 AD, during the reign of the Byzantine Empire.
