Skopelos personalities: Pavlos Nirvanas, the poet from Skopelos Greece, Sporades

Pavlos Nirvanas from Skopelos: Pavlos Nirvanas, a multi-skilled poet actually called Petros K. Apostolidis, was born in Russia in 1886 and died in 1937 in Athens. His father was originated from Skopelos and Nirvanas loved this island a lot. Nirvana in a young age moved from Russia to Piraeus where he learned his first letters and served in the Royal Army as a doctor. He was an assistant surgeon and retired as a general chief doctor. His work as a writer was much appreciated.

lessons for mankind. After reading part of his works, Papadiamantis named Nirvanas his "fellow countryman", based on the closeness between Skiathos and Skopelos. Pavlos Nirvanas used to spend many summers on Skopelos. The beauty of the island gave him peace and inspiration to write his poems and dedicate time to his passion.

Today the Municipality of Skopelos, to honour the poet, has given the name of Nirvanas to a street on the island and the former house of the poet, next to the church of Trion Hierarchon, can still be visited.
