charm. Its maze of narrow, stepped streets is lined by enchanting houses in Venetian architecture, each with a tiny balcony overflowing with flowers and offering gorgeous views. Everywhere you turn there is a charming chapel and in short distance from the town, there are many Byzantine monasteries to visit in Skopelos island.
Another popular village in Skopelos island is Glossa, located on the northern side. With many tourist facilities and accommodation, this is probably the most known resort on the island. In close distance to Glossa, there is the lovely church of Agios Ioannis, where scenes from the Hollywood movie "Mamma Mia!" (2008) were shot.
The beaches on Skopelos island are many, but in some cases accessibility is hampered by mountainous terrain and steep cliffs. The beaches of Limnonari and Agios Yannis are the sandiest, while Panormos beach is lined with white pebbles and has a string of fish taverns across the bay. Another lovely beach is Stafylos, located on the southern side of the island, which gets particularly popular due to the beautiful wild landscape that surrounds it.
Skopelos island is a great place to walk, especially in spring and autumn, when the weather is not that hot as in summer. Many trekking paths dot the landscape and lead from one beach to the other, passing through green forests and lovely settlements. |
