Alexandros Moraitidis from Skiathos

The writer Alexandros Moraitidis from Skiathos: Alexandros Moraitidis was a scholar and novelist, the cousin of the famous writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, one of the most important Greek literary figures of the 19th century. Moraitidis was born in Skiathos in 1850 and spent his first school years on the island. At the age of 21, he graduated from Varvakeios School of Athens and studied at the linguistic department in the University of Athens.

He worked as a journalist and by the year 1886, he was already a professor and the proud recipient of the national distinction of the Arts and Letters. After the death of his wife, he devoted himself to translation and theological writings. His rich work consists of poets, theatrical plays and many novels. He was elected as a member of the Academy of Athens and in 1929 he returned as a monk to his homeland, Skiathos, where he died the same year.
