The Agios Georgios Horse Racing of Skiathos: On the feast of Agios Georgios, the patron saint of all the shepherds and cavaliers, a special tradition takes place: local horses race each other to a lake.
This particular lake is located near the airport of Skiathos and the race starts from the suburbs of Skiathos town. This event is attended by many locals and tourists, while a spirit of fun and enjoyment surrounds the entire event. Horsemen are usually young people and the winner is said to be blessed for the rest of the year.
A friendly and sporty event, the horses are raced to honour the saint, as Agios Georgios is mostly depicted as a young soldier on a horse, slaying a dragon. |
