Skiathos Panagia Kounistra: The Monastery of Panagia Kounistra in Skiathos Greece

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Kounistra in Skiathos Greece, Sporades: The Monastery of Panagia Kounistra (or Ikonistra) is found in the middle of a pine forest on the south western side of Skiathos Island. It is actually located about 13 km from the main town, on the way to Aselinos beach. This monastery is considered the protector of the island.

Constructed in around 1650 A.D., the monastery was established after the finding of a icon of Virgin Mary. This icon was found hanged from a pine tree through a rope and moving, thus the name of the monastery came ("kounistra" means she who moves"). The icon of Virgin Mary was considered a miracle and it is now hosted in the Cathedral of Skiathos Town.

The Monastery of Kounistra is dedicated to the Presentation of Virgin Mary and it celebrates on November 21st. This is an important religious festival for the island. The katholikon of the monastery is a one-aisled basilica with a dome and has an impressive wooden iconostasis. The katholikon used to have wonderful frescoes on the walls, that now have faded out.
