Atop the hill from Patitiri sits the charming old town of Hora, the old capital of Alonissos island and an absolutely exquisite village with its typical winding, stepped streets, old houses and small artistic shops that overlook the beautiful sea.
Alonissos island boasts some of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in the Aegean. The southern coastline is completely sheltered from winds and safe for swimming. You can also try diving in Alonissos to discover the spectacular underwater world at this side of the Aegean. An astoundingly beautiful seascape of diverse topography, a variety of marine flora and fauna, sunken cities and old shipwrecks awaits you.
The numerous rocky islets, coves and underwater caves along the coastline of Alonissos island is home to the endangered species of Monachus Monachus, also called the Monk seal prompting authorities to establish a Marine Park in the region in 1992. There are boat tours that leave from Patitiri and go to the Marine Park and other deserted islands for swimming.
Alonissos island also offers numerous walking trails for the nature lovers, and the town administration has undertaken the task of signposting, paving and lighting up these trails giving visitors a chance to experience the stunning landscape of Alonissos, its dense oak and pine woods, its fruit orchards and the island women dressed in traditional clothes. As a step towards ecotourism, the island also hosts the International Environmental Day to celebrate the pristine beauty of Alonissos. |
