According to the excavations on the island, Alonissos was inhabited from pre-historic times. Moreover, excavations show that a number of different cultures developed on this Greek island, as proved by the finding of the remains of the acropolis walls from Classical times.
Actually, experts believe it is a part of the old settlement of Ikos city where Kokkinokastro is located in our days.
However, contrary to what the visitor may think, there is just one tiny museum on Alonissos. |

The many empires ruling Alonissos, such as the Byzantine, the Venetian, and the Turkish left their traces on the island, and those manifestations are shown at the Historic and Folklore Museum.

Although the museum is the result of the private effort of a family which had been collecting artefacts, pictures, ornaments, naval warfare items, and other objects for years, it displays a fantastic overview of Alonissos culture.
It opened in 2000, and it is really professionally organised.
