Alonissos Islets, Greece: Information about the surrounding islets of Alonissos, Sporades

Peristera
It is the closest islet to Alonissos with a few non-permanent inhabitants and lovely sandy coves. Campers are tolerated only on one beach known as “Barbecue Bay”, where fires are allowed. Remains of an old castle can be seen in Peristera. The islet has two natural harbours: Peristeri and Vasiliko.

Kyra Panaghia
Kyra Panaghia is the largest islet around Alonissos.

It is own by the Meyistis Monastery of Mount Athos and have two lovely monasteries.

The taxi-boat stops at one of the many sandy beaches of the islet.

Yioura
On this islet is a stalactite cave known as the Cyclops’s Cave reputed to be the cave where Odysseus was imprisoned by Polyphemus (one of the most famous Cyclops), son of Poseidon. The service of a guide is necessary to visit this cave.
A rare species of wild goats live on Yioura, as well as many rare plants.

Piperi
Located to the north-east of Alonissos, near Yioura, this islet is a refuge for sea-birds and the famous monk seals.

It is forbidden to go on this islet without a scientific licence and permit (non scientists are not allowed on Piperi).

Psathoura
On this islet is the brightest and tallest lighthouse in the Aegean as well as the remains of a submerged ancient town, believed, by some, to be the ancient Alonissos.

Psathoura is the northernmost of the islets.

Skantzoura
This islet has beautiful beaches, one monastery with guest’s accommodation and a few seasonal shepherds.

Papous
It is a small islet with a lovely church and situated between Kyra Panaghia and Yioura.
