Alonissos Beaches: Megali Ammos beach in Alonissos Greece
Alonissos Megali Ammos 01 Megali Ammos Beach Alonissos: The beach of Megali Ammos has an interesting contradiction, since its name means ‘Big sand’, despite the fact of being small and pebbled. However, visitors usually do not get disappointed from this beach, no matter what its name indicates.

In fact, not only Megali Ammos, but also the region where it belongs to is wild and unspoiled areas with an incredibly natural beauty that transmits immensity. This in part may explain the name of the beach.

Megali Ammos beach is placed on the west coast of Alonissos, at 5 km from Patitiri. Since the road is unpaved and has the reputation of being a little rough, it is advisable to rent a car – a jeep may be ideal – or a motorbike. However, it is not in a very bad condition and it is no dangerous at all. Travelling from the north-west in south direction by the coastline, Megali Ammos is the first beach, followed by Tskalia, Gialia, Vrisitsa, and Mikros Mourtias. In case of getting to these beaches by rented car or boat, the trip may take just from 10 to 45 minutes.

On the other hand, many people also think of ‘Megali Ammos’ as a whole region, and not as a single beach. Taking this point of view, the name seems less contradictory. In fact, this region has some small coves with beaches with sand and pebbles that are ideal for exploring. Megali Ammos is obviously included. Although these beaches are more difficult to reach, as their access in general includes some walking and climbing, the effort really pays off, as these are paradisiacal places. This feature is in part given by the great crystal clear waters that surround Alonissos, which in combination to the pine forests that reach most of these beaches, create a sense of unspoilt-ness and freedom.

Regarding the facilities, it is worth to make clear that the mentioned features about this beach and this whole area have been preserved along time in part because of its lack of shops, restaurants and other amenities. This assures certain level of privacy and tranquillity to the place, in spite of being really beautiful and enjoyable.

Another interesting fact about this beach is related to archaeology, since some big vertebras of a prehistoric animal have been found nearby, and they still can be seen by heading to the northern side of the island. In fact, the whole Alonissos is very appreciated by palaeontologists, because of the Neolithic tools that have been uncovered on the area of Kastraki, at the inner part of the island.

In conclusion, apart from the great exploited areas more oriented to tourism, Alonissos also has some virgin terrain that remains unspoiled for those who like to experience this type of unusual places. The great convenience of this variety of options is that there is no need to suffer from deprivations in order to know such places, since when taking the proper measures; a great day can be spent with no problems. On the other hand, when missing the crowds, it is time to get back to Patitiri, where visitors can enjoy a delicious meal after a great day at the Megali Ammos beach.
