Spetses Geography, Greece: Information about the geography of Spetses, Saronic

 

 

Spetses is part of the group of island called the Argo-saronic islands (along with Hydra, Poros and Aegina) and is the southernmost island of the group, lying at the entrance of the Argolic Gulf.

Spetses has two harbours: the new one called Dapia, which is the centre of the capital (Spetses Town) and the Old Harbour located in the fisherman’s settlement of Analipsi.

A large part of the island is covered by a thick pine forest.
This forest is considered as a protected environment and part of the island’s great beauty.

It is not the original forest that used to cover Spetses during antiquity (that is why it was called
 
square kilometres and a coastline of about 27 kilometres.
It is located in the so-called Myrtoan Sea, at a distance of 52 nautical miles from Piraeus and only 1, 5 nautical miles from the north-eastern peninsula of the Peloponnese.

The capital of the island is Spetses Town, extending along half the north-east coast of the island, showing how the central points of the settlement changed over the years; it is formed by various districts all concentrated over the eastern coast, facing Porto Heli and Costa, in the Peloponnese.

Spetses is not very mountainous but it is organised around one single peak, which is of course the highest, Profitis Ilias, rising at an altitude of 300 metres.

The coastline of Spetses is not very indented and has only two natural inlets: Zogeria on the northern side and the sea channel of Baltiza located on the east of the island.
