A lot of lovely churches and monasteries are scattered around the island of Spetses, most of them dating from the early Christian times and from the Post-Byzantine period.

The main church of the monastery houses nice Byzantine icons of Saint Nicholas who is the patron of the island and of fishermen and sailors. This monastery is very visited and famous because it was there that the Spetsiote leaders took the oath of freedom and raised the banner of the Greek Revolution.
 
The Church of Agia Marina

The small chapel of Agia Marina is a pink and white construction with a round dome and is situated at a 10 minutes walk from the Old Harbour (Baltiza). It stands on the top of a rocky cliff, overlooking the popular beach of Agia Marina.

Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral

The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos
Located above the Old Harbour of Spetses, Baltiza, opposite a beautiful square full of traditional pebble mosaics, the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) is the seat of the island’s bishop.

It was built in 1805 and has a superb arched bell tower made of the fine Tinos marble and a courtyard with a mosaic floor.

is also the place where the body of Paul-Marie Bonaparte, Napoleon’s nephew, was kept during several years, before being transferred to an islet of the Peloponnese where those who died for the Greek War of Independence were buried.


The Church of Agia Triada

The Byzantine church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) is located in the neighbourhood of Kastelli, one of the many districts of the capital, Spetses Town.

The church of Agia Triada houses a superb wood carved iconostasis and has an unusual tiered steeple that has a single bell in the middle of a triple arch.
 

The church is dedicated to the Orthodox saint Agia Marina which is the saint of education and virtue.

The Church of Panagia Armata

The Church of Panagia Armata (Virgin of the Armada) is a white and yellow chapel built between 1824 and 1830 by the Spetsiote captain Ioannis Koutsis, to commemorate and honour the defeat of the Ottoman fleet during the naval Battle of Argolis between the Turks and the Greeks on the 8th of September, 1822. Some cannons burned the Turkish flag during the battle.

From the chapel one can enjoy a magnificent view over the harbour and Spetses Town, and it is one of the best spots to enjoy the sunset.
