General information

Galatas, the sister town of Poros, is located only a few hundred meters from Poros island. During the summer season, ferry boats leave for Poros every 30 minutes, and the journey lasts just 5 minutes. Small water taxis also travel between the two towns throughout the day. It is also accessible from Athens (180 kilometers from the international airport of Athens) and requires you to pass over the Corinth Canal on the way. Providing a magnificent view of Poros from its beautiful waterfront, Galatas is fast becoming a full-fledged town, with its own mayor and council.

The settlement was first built in the late 19th century. However, it only began to develop after 1920, when many Arcadian farmers started coming here to sell milk and cheese to the local residents. This is how the town got its name, as the word ‘galatas’ means ‘milkman’ in Greek. Agriculture is still a major industry, with people growing mostly olives and citrus fruit.

The area is mainly known for the ravishing Lemon Tree Forest that stretches a mere 3 kilometers from the village. Boasting numerous cafes, restaurants and bars, Galatas town is a tourist’s delight. Though not as developed as Poros, it has its own rustic charm, having retained a more traditional, authentic atmosphere.

Aliki is considered to be the best beach in Galatas, and it is much bigger, offering visitors all the necessary amenities, as well as a water sports center with a pool. This shallow beach is also accessible via water taxi, and there are two taverns close to it.
