Hydra has an extremely vibrant atmosphere be it during the daytime or at night. We stayed at a beautiful hotel in the town itself that was originally a mansion. I liked that the locals in
Hydra preserved their traditions despite the invasion of tourism. The architecture was picturesque and I saw a couple of panygiria in my week there. Believe me, if there is a distinctive element in the Greek culture, this is panygiria for me, these local festivals that gather people in the square and dance and drink all night. This gives a wonderful feeling of community and togetherness! It is so sad that we have lost this feeling today in the western countries…
The port is the best place to hangout at anytime of the day. Night clubs like Pirate and Saronikos are very popular. My favourite restaurant was Taverna Gitoniko. The Greek salad and the pies are my favourite dishes. Right in the port, you will also see a nice museum housed in a traditional mansion. When we were there, it had an exhibition with some nice paintings. Apparently they were paintings of a famous Greek artist, but I don't remember the name now. The general idea about this museum is that you will love it if you like art.
