The architecture of Hydra is really unique and exceptional; it is the only place in Greece with so many beautiful 18th century and 19th century buildings.

This is due to the fact that during those centuries, because of the great commercial fleet of the island, many wealthy merchants and ship owners asked some Venetian builders, carpenters and artisans to work on their beautiful and luxurious mansions, which have today been restored and kept in very good conditions, as they were during the 19th century.

Most of the houses on the island are built of grey stone which is abundant on Hydra, with tiled roofs; they are tall and narrow, unlike the houses of the neighbouring island of Spetses and Poros, because of the
