General: Not miss Mesta and Komi

We have visited Chios 2 times. Both times, we stayed there for about 15 days, and roamed the villages and the beaches, enough I think to be able to advise you now: Don't miss these 3 places: Mesta, Maura Volia and Komi.

Mesta is a medieval village at the south of the island. All the houses are based on an old castle that still holds imposing over the years. As you arrive, you can easily real...

General: Make a mapbook

It took about 3 hours and 40 minutes to get to Chios from Norway. It is nice and very convenient that the Island has it own airport :)
This was my second time on Chios, the first was two years ago, so I knew what to expect. It is so much history there and much to see. During the two times I have visisted Chios, m...

General: Be careful on the road

There are so many things to do in Chios in order to see all the island. You will find so many museums, castles, ancient sites, monasteries and lovely villages. Beaches on Chios are not the best in Greece, mostly because they are pebble and access to them is not easy. Roads are not good in Chios and you have to drive slowly and carefully. The Greek drivers will klaxon at you but do not pay atten...

Villages: Appreciation for small things

I am afraid I have nothing special to write about Chios, other than what has been mentioned so far from the previous reviewers. I just want to stress out how much I loved this island and how desperately I want to go back! My first visit on Chios was five years ago to visit Vrontados, the village where my grandparents (emigrants to the USA) lived. Myself I am a proud Greek-American who wants to ...

Beaches: Carry a map with you

This is one of the least organized beaches on Chios. There are no sun beds or unbrellas, not even a tavern (at least, 3 years ago when I went there). You take a track road to go and it would be better to have a map because sings are not very sufficient. You will not find many people there, except for some couples.

General: Five days were not enough

My trip to Chios was quite short, in fact. Only 5 days, which would be fine for another island but for Chios they were enough to see only the basic things. We spend most of our time in the Town and went for a visit to Pyrgi and Olympi. The cave close to Olympi was excellent, really imposing but a bit frightening, too. Pyrgi was a nice village with incredible designs on the walls. I had the best...

Villages: A bit of a Castle or a Prison

Olympi is a small village that looks like a fortress. Tall, stone walls are on both sides of the narrow streets, creating a bit of depressive atmosphere in the middle of the summer. It looks as a Medieval Castle and a prison as well. While you walk in the villages, you will see many old men on a horseback. Close to the village, there is a nice cave with stalactites and stalagmites.

General: Explore the island

I discovered Chios on the Internet. When I went, I discovered a gorgeous island that I particularly loved for its lack of tourists. Everything was excellent there. Mavra Volia the best beach. Rent a car and explore the island to see all its beauties. Any of the bars along the waterfront in Chios town is great for a drink. Take my advice and go for a day or two in Cesme, Turkey.

Beaches: Serenity at all its majesty

I have no words to describe Trahili beach. It is probably the cleanest beach on Chios and has very warm waters. It is not organized, probably that is why it is so beautiful. Trahili is a perfect serene atmosphere. If you go in the evening, you will find even less swimmers. Just take some water and food with you because there is no cafeteria there.

Beaches: Clean water and many people

Karfas is one of the few organized beaches on Chios. The island is generally not known for its beaches, but for its villages and nice flora. On Karfas, you will find a combination of clean water and popularity. There are many hotels around the beach and all tourists get down to the beach from eearly in the morning. Morewover, it is close to the capital, which brings more people. My advice: as t...

Villages: Special village

Pyrgi is a special village. I haven't seen architecture and wall paintings like that. Many strange paintings were on the walls of simple houses and public buildings. The square was my favourite place on Pyrgi and the mansion we stayed lovely! We stayed there only for a couple of nights because we were continually changing accomodation to see more places. Nice, stone and wooden house, ideal to f...

Beaches: Magemena

Chios doesn't have a lot of nice beaches. I visited four or five beaches and I was not particularly excited. For me, Chios is mostly an island to go sightseeing, driving through the mountainous landscape or having coffee in the traditional coffee houses. As for beaches, I believe Magemena is that touched me quite a bit. It is far from the main town so make sure you have a car to go. Buses are n...

General: Many delays

In September 1995, my wife and I made a combination trip: one week in Chios and one week in Lesvos.
After the first week, we were brought to the port of Chios to take the ferry to Mytilini in Lesvos at 04h00 in the morning.
We waited and waited, and at last, at 08h00, there came the ship. It had been delayed due to a bomb alert on board a ship in Rafina. After the week in Lesvos, we went back...

General: Visit Pyrgi and Oinouses

Chios is a big island that you need a lot of days to explore. I was't actually impressed by its beaches, they were most pebbled or windy. But I really enjoyed the mountainous landscape. Definitely visit Pyrgi, it is the most unique village I've been to. Also if you have a couple of days to spend, go to Oinouses. It is a small island to the opposite coast, close to Turkey. It doesn't have many s...

General: Quiet nightlife

I visited Chios for the first time last September and, although sometimes I would wish for more wild nightlife, in overall I had a nice time during my holidays. We came to Athens by plane and then went to Chios by boat. My sister, who passed her previous holidays there, recommended this island to me. I have to say that the beaches were great: clean and absolutely safe; my favorite beach was Vro...
