The accommodation is sited on the edge of the caldera without the many steps as found in Fira and Oia. Caldera Lilium staff are wonderful and very obliging. The property looks very upmarket with plenty of room around the pool (a rarity if staying on the edge of the caldera). ...

Mykonos: Stay at one of the beaches

If you are a family, stay at one of the beaches. Try to get a hotel on the beach. Mykonos is hilly, and your hotel, just 200 m from the beach, could be 200m almost straight up a hill. Kosmoplaz Hotel was on the beach with really pleasant and helpful staff. The rooms were clean, the a/c worked well, and there was plenty of hot water.

The two days I spent there the islands was subject to terrible winds that drove stinging sand into my skin. The water was beautiful, the beach is rocky and if you want to use the beach chairs you'll have to pay a fee. The Tinos Beach Hotel was nice enough, but it's a mile and a half from the main town and when the bus stops running it's either a taxi or walk back....

Heraklion: Don't Miss Knossos

Heriklion is a busy, dirty city like New York or Rome. The city is surrounded by a huge wall built in the 1500's, which is in itself an amazing site. The nightlife is not particularly memorable, but if you get away from the harbor you can find a good restaurant at a decent price. But the main reason to stay here is to visit Knossos. It's an ancient city a short bus ride away. My dad was captain of the ship and we had gone to Syros for the ship to be sold. That sale took 9 months which were the happiest months I can remember. I learned to swim having been thrown off the ship! I played with local kids who taught me to catch octopus using a spear and an oil drum. Bad - when we first got there it took them 30 minutes to check us in. The receptionist left us waiting in the lobby and never came back to see how we were.
