Vassaras village in Sparti Greece: Vassaras is a picturesque village of Laconia that belongs to the municipality of Oinountos. It is located about 25 km from Sparti and probably got its name from Vachus, a nickname of Dionysus, the god of wine. In fact, the village is surrounded by vast regions of vineyards and olive trees.
Today, Vassaras has only 300 permanent inhabitants but in summer the population grows double with immigrants coming from abroad or from Athens. The inhabitants of Vassaras fought hard in the Greek Revolution in the 1821 and their contribution was important in several battles. |
