cities were fighting for the dominance over the other Greek states. Located on the banks of River Eurotas and at the foot of Mount Taygetus, Sparta Greece was a bit secluded from the rest of the country, which is probably why they developed a kind of xenophobia, created a special political system and trained the strongest army all over Greece.
The flourishing of Sparta Greece lasted till after the Peloponnesian War, in the 4th century B.C. Then the town gradually lost its old glory and let the neighbouring town of Mystras ruin in the Byzantine times. After the Greek War of Independence, by order of king Otto, the first king of modern Greece, Sparti Greece was reconstructed a couple of km far from the ancient town. Today, Sparti Greece is a small agricultural town with stone buildings, ample streets and beautiful squares. In fact, this is one of the first towns in Greece to have been constructed according to a plan.
Although this is not a tourist place itself, Sparti Greece is close to many tourist spots of Peloponnese, including Monemvasia, Gythio, Mystras and Elafonissos. Therefore, it can be used as a base for excursions. The imposing Mount Taygetos also offers many routes for trekking and mountain biking. |
