Patra Local products

Patra and the broader region of Achaia, in northern Peloponnese, is first of all famous for its delicious wine. The tradition of winemaking started in the middle 19th century when the German Gustav Clauss opened a winery a few km outside Patra and it continues till today. The most popular wine variety that is cultivated in the area is Mavrodaphne, a kind of dark red, sweet and very strong wine.

Mavrodaphne is very famous in Greece as this is the wine that the church uses in the Holy Communication. People in the mountainous villages around Patra also produce cheese and milk. The coastal villages, on the other hand, are famous for their fresh fish.
