The town first developed in the Roman times, when a fortress was built on a hill above the town to protect it from invasions. For the Christians, this is a holy place as it was in Patras where Saint Andrew was crucified by the Romans. That is why Saint Andrew is the protector of the town and an impressive church has been built on the site of his death, close to the port of Patra Greece.
Other spots of sightseeing in Patra Greece include the Medieval Castle, from where visitors get amazing view of the town and the sea, the Roman Odeon, where cultural events are hosted in summer, the newly-renovated Archaeological Museum and the winery Achaia Clauss, where the sweet wine "mavrodafni" is being produced since 1861.
Patras Greece is a lively town with many shopping streets, university students and beautiful squares. The Square of King George constitutes the centre of Patra Greece, while the square of Psilalonia is the most elegant spot of the town. The Old Town of Patra Greece surrounds the Medieval Castle and offers a picturesque quarter to stroll around.
The busiest period for Patra Greece is during the Carnival, when thousands of visitors come and take part in the great parade on the last Sunday of the Carnival. All people are dressed with costumes and a festive atmosphere dominates all over the city.
In close distance to Patra Greece, there are lovely beach resorts to spend few days of your vacations, such as Vrahneika, Rio and Psathopyrgos. Patra can also be used as a base for close daily excursions to important destinations, including Olympia, Kalavryta, Nafpaktos and Delphi.
