Olympic Games, which began
around the 11th century BC and
started as a local festival.
However, along the centuries this practise gained more and more popularity, to the point that people from other states came to Olympia and even a truce was declared with a month of
anticipation in order to avoid disturbs during the competitions.
This athletic festival occurred every four years and extended over five days and included wrestling, as well as chariot and horse racing, the pentathlon -a discipline in which discus and javelin throwing, long jump and running were included, apart from the pancratium, a form of fisticuffs.
By the 4th century, the athletics competing were professionals, and were highly sponsored and rewarded. The reward however, was not as related as money as it is today.
The athletes fought for a crown of wild olive, which was enough to honour him, his family and his city for decades.
In addition, some literary artists like poets, writers and historians used to read their works to the crowd.
