According to many historic sources, each of the ancient Greek cities had its own government and was under constant wars. However, a month before this festival, a sacred truce was established so people could travel to Olympia with no danger of suffering attacks. This tradition extended throughout the centuries under different forms and due to this fact, the spirit of peace and international cooperation remains in the festivals that currently take place at Olympia.
