The archaeologists of the German Archaeological Institute will start excavations within the next months in order to discover the ancient hippodrome of Olympia. With the books of ancient geographer Pausanias, whol lived in the 2nd century A.D., the archaeologists will use the method of geomagnetic tomography for their excavations.

According to Pausanias, the hippodrome was a flat area about 780 m long and 320 m wide, divided in two corridors. As it has not been found till today, scientists believe that the hippodrome was drifted by floods of Alfeios River in the Middle Ages, while others believe that the monument survived but it is burried under tones of river sand.
