Nafplion Festivals, Greece: Information about the Festivals of Nafplion, Peloponnese

 

 

Nafplion Festivals:
When planning your holidays, it’s good to have in mind some dates and places where special events are organized, so that you can benefit the most from your holidays, and get in touch with the local people, tradition and culture.

Every year for the last 16 years the Nafplion Music Festival is organized in the end of June with a lot of success.

On the 1st of October is Agios Anastassios' Day, the celebration in memory of the patron saint of
Nafplion.
 
On the 29th of August in the village of Midea, just 10 km away from Nafplion, there is a celebration in memory of Agios Ioannis Prodromos (Saint John the Baptist), while in the same village on the 8th of May there is a celebration in memory of Agios Ioannis Theologos (Saint John the Theologian). There are feasts in the village of Midea on both dates.

Nea Kios, just 7 km west of Nafplion, has also some feasts and festivals worth mentioning. The Carnival is celebrated on the last Sunday of the Triodion and the "Koulouma" on the first
 
Apart from these mostly religious celebrations, there are more festivals in Nea Kios.

The Peloponnesian Backgammon Championship takes place here every year in June, while in July there is a series of events called "Mikrasiatika" -meaning "events for Asia Minor"- in memory of the people who left their homes in
Asia Minor during the population exchange in 1924.

In August, another festival with cultural events takes place here, "Kiana", while in the beginning of September there is another celebration dedicated to sprats; in

 


In February, the Carnival is celebrated with many cultural events.

If you are in Nafplion in the end of August, you should definitely visit the village of Drepanon on the 26th of August. It's the celebration of Agii Andrianos and Natalia and there is a feast in the village.
 
Monday of the Lent with a lot of wine and lenten food; because these are movable celebrations, we can only say that they take place usually in March or April.

On Good Friday, there is a traditional custom in Nea Kios; the burning of Barabbas.
On August 22nd, the feast of Panagia Odigitria takes place.
 

Greek this is called "Giorti tis papalinas".

A similar celebration to the "Giorti tis papalinas" exists also in Tolo. It is called "Giorti tis tratas", meaning "Feast of the trawler" and takes place on the 1st of October.
