This town played an important role in the Greek War of Independence and it became the first capital of the modern Greek State the first years of independence. In fact, this is where Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of modern Greece, was murdered outside the church of Agios Spiridonas, in the Old Town of Nafplion.
