More about: Mystras
Mystras is a nice archaeological site close to Sparta. We were there this August as part of our driving around Peloponnese. Climbing to the top of Mystras was quite tiring, as it was a terribly hot morning. (Going down was certainly easier and much quicker!). So, if you want to see Mystras all over it, better go in the evening, at around 5 o'clock as the site closes at 7. It needs about two hours to see all these lovely churches, the museum, the ruined gates, the old walls of Mystras. But you get a view of the Byzantine glory and you get to understand why the architecture of Greece is still influenced by the Byzantines. I liked best the church of Agioi Theodoroi, really lovely church. If you are not in a hurry to continue your trip, spend the night in the nearby village of Mystras, the modern village actually. It is a picturesque place with some taverns in the square. Prefer to stay in Mystras, not Sparta, because the atmophere of the village is more impressive and calm.
