We visited Mystras last August but we arrived there late, as the site was about to close (it closes at seven in the evening). So, we just saw it from a hill above. The modern village of Mystras was very picturesque and had old, stone buildings. The square was dominated by traditional mansions, which had turned into hostels, and grilled steak was smelling all over. Three minutes on foot from the square, there is a statue of Konstantinos Paleologos, the last Byzantine Emperor who was crowned in Mystras. The Greeks always think of this person with respect.
About 2 km from the village of Mystras, there is the Cave of Keadas, in Tripi village, where it is said that the ancient Spartans threw their handicapped children. Keadas is today not allowed to go close because of rock slidings. If you approach a bit, you will feel a light chilly breeze coming up from the cave. People said that this breeze is the soul of the lost children.
