Mystras, and Laconia in general, counts on many traditional festivals that allow visitors to enjoy the culture and customs of the area in a festive framework. Palaiologeia, on May 29th, is the most popular festival of Mystras, dedicated to the Palaeologos family. This festival includes a requiem mass for the memory of Constantinos Paleologos, a despot of Mystras who later became the last Byzantine emperor and died in 1453 defending Constantinople from the Turks.

The Sainopoulio Festival is also very interesting. This festival takes place every summer in the Sainopoulio Theatre in Magoula, near Sparta, and includes theatre performances, concerts and other artistic events.

A Winter Welcome Festival takes place on the slopes of Mt Taygetos on the first Sunday of October while the Spring festival is celebrated on May 1st.
Do not also forget that some churches and monasteries organize festivals on the name day of their saint, as for example the festival of Prophet Elias, a small church on the slopes of Mt Taygetos, held on July 18th to 20th.
