The old town of Mystras is a great sample of the Byzantine architecture. This town is generally well preserved and reflects the glory of the past as best as possible.
The fortress, at the top of the hill, was built by the Franks. However, the Greeks and the Turks made some additions over the years. It is mainly stone-built and has two walls, three huge stone gates, circular and square-shaped towers and many cisterns. |

The abandoned palaces in the centre of Ano Mystras, dating from the mid-13th and the mid-14th centuries, have an L shape and many floors.
They are built on rocky foundations and their architectural type is complex, with numerous chambers, arches, attics and cellars.
There also some well-preserved mansions scattered along the castle, such as the Laskaris and the Frangopoulos mansions. |

The abandoned churches and monasteries of Mystras are also of great architecture. They have wonderful bell towers, domes and wall paintings, dating from the 13th- 15th centuries and representing scenes from the Bible.
These architecture constructions, appreciated by all visitors, have turned the inhabited castle of Mystras into a popular tourist attraction. |
