The archaeological site of Mystras is actually the remains of an old Byzantine town. Mystras was at its peak in the 13th and the 14th century, the last couple of centuries of the Byzantine Empire. The Venetians were the first to build a Castle in Mystras and the Byzantines transformed it. Mnay Byzantine churches are found today in the site that stand well-preserved. The site of Mystras was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1989. |
