been a cultural city which had a high impact in Greece. This was the land of Atrides whose history is covered by a secret veil that floats between myth and reality. Mycenae Greece was also the birth place of King Agamemnon, the Greek leader in the Trojan War.
The acropolis of Mycenae Greece is built on a rocky altitude of 280 metres above the sea level, between two steep hills. Its location has a military significance. It is well-hidden from the southern side. The Cyclopean Walls that surround the acropolis were built during the 14th-13th century with massive stones. The archaeological findings and the architectural remains found near the great walls revealed special construction methods used to make a well-organized fortification.
Inside the acropolis there is the palace complex and more importantly the Gate of the Lions being the main entrance of the acropolis and a typical example of monumental sculpture.
The Mycenae tombs are among these offering a special interest, with Agamemnon tomb or the treasure of Atrea being the most important and one of the most luxurious Mycenaean tombs. It has a long road of 36 metres and a large dome. Most of the findings discovered in the tombs and the surrounding area are displays in the Mycenae Archaeological Museum. |
