Monemvasia Festivals, Greece: Information about the Festivals of Monemvasia, Peloponnese

 

 

Monemvasia Festivals: In Monemvasia, the festivals observed are the main ones of Greece, such as the carnival. This one takes place at the centre of the outer town, and includes performances of local musicians, as well as the eye-catching burning of a scarecrow, and also many wine from this location. During this date, the whole Greece celebrates.

Another typical celebration is Easter. In Monemvasia the Easter celebration consists of taking an Icon around the alleys of the castle, with the municipal band escorting the procession.
 
At the central square of the castle, a tradition known as the ‘burning of Judas’ takes place, which is held on many Greek islands to date.

In May the Chrisafitissa Virgin Mary’s festival is celebrated. It takes place at one of the churches around the area of the Fortress –the name that is given to the wall that protects the lower town from three sides: east, south and west.

Then, on July 23rd  the Liberation of Monemvasia festival is celebrated. This date exists in remembrance of the liberation
 
movement of 1821, Monemvasia was the first of all the occupied cities of Peloponnese that gained its freedom, as the Turks gave it up during the Greek War of Independence.

To date, the Liberation of Monemvasia festival is a big celebration that actually includes many festivals organised by the municipality such as  the burning of a ship occasion, and various concerts.
