An overview of Monemvasia
Greece...
The name Monemvasia derives from the Greek words “Mone” and “Embasia” which means “Single entrance”. The medieval castle-town of Monemvasia –or Palia Monemvasia- stands on a 300-meter high rock off the east coast of the Peloponnese and is connected to the mainland through a bridge. It is also called “Malvasia”, the “ Gibraltar of the East” or simply “the Rock”.
Among the attractions found within the walls, visitors can admire many Byzantine churches, monumental buildings, the house of the famous Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos, and an archaeological collection, housed in a historical building at the square of Elkomenos Christos.
At a distance of 1 km from the castle lies the village of Nea Monemvasia or Gefyra. The modern settlement offers visitors all the necessary facilities.
