Raches
village Kyparissia: Raches is located 5 km to the northeast of Kyparissia. The village is said to have been established by a pastoral group from the highlands of Arcadia, in central Peloponnese. About 10 families who came to the area to escape the harsh winter of the highlands decided to make the area their permanent home and this was how the village of Rahes was founded in the 19th century.
The olive groves are abundant in the village and the production of olive oil is the main occupation of the people. A monument to the young men of Raches who died in the Second World War stands in the main square. On the eastern side of the village, there is a church dedicated to Saint Georgios, the patron saint of Raches. During its festival, celebrated every year in the traditional manner, the little village comes alive with lot of music and dancing. |
