Kyparissia Architecture, Greece: The architecture of Kyparissia, Peloponnese

 
The town of Kyparissia presents an amphitheatric pattern of architecture. It is a rather well-developed town with all the modern facilities but still it preserves its traditional elements.

The actual town of Kyparissia is divided into two parts. The old part of the town is known as Ano Poli. It distinguishes for the traditional stone houses, paved streets, Byzantine churches and lovely squares. It is a protected neighbourhood and every house has to follow the traditional form.

also has a small port and manyshopping stores. The buildings and houses in this part mostly follow a neoclassical form of architecture.
Kyparissia is also known for its great castle above the town. The Castle of Kyparissia occupies a fascinating position giving a great view of the town and the Ionian Sea.

Although the exact period of its establishment is not known, it is believed that the present structure was built on the site of an ancient acropolis. During the Byzantine period, under the rule of Emperor Justinian, this Fortress was built with four turrets surrounding it.
 
Kato Poli is the modern half of the town and consists of new settlements. This part of the city
Visit also the church of Agios Athanasios close to the town centre, with impressive domes.
Today, only one of these turrets survives. The rest of the Castle also lies almost in ruins.
