Kalavryta Festivals, Greece: Information about the Festivals of Kalavryta, Peloponnese

Kalavrita is known for its tumultuous history, which is proudly celebrated even today. The delivery of the town from the Turks is celebrated each year on the 21st of March with much aplomb.

Another important festival is the Memorial service held for the victims of the Massacre by the Germans during the Second World War; held every year on the 13th of December, this solemn ceremony is a tribute to the innocent people who lost their lives on this unfortunate day in 1943.

Many religious festivals also takeplace. Saint Alexios, the protector of the town, is celebrated on March 16th-17th. On the 14th - 15th of August, there is the festival of Panagia; the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated in the Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo and all the other churches of the area.

Another festival worth to mention is the descent of the Vouraikos River, celebrated in May; the Vouraikos River is much revered in Kalavrita and the surrounding areas as it provides fresh fish and is a fairly popular tourist attraction.

There are numerous other festivals celebrated in Kalavrita so be sure to look up the festivals that coincide with your visit to this beautiful place.
