The Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is another beautiful monastery worth visiting. Situated across from Lapanagoi village, on the right side of Selinounda River, the monastery is believed to have been built by General Velissarios Justinian around 523 A.D.
The center of the monastery houses the magnificent chapel of the Virgin Mary, constructed in Byzantine style. It contains a beautiful icon screen, carved on wood and holding the icon of the Virgin.
The monastery was destroyed during a Turkish siege in 1458, after which the fathers decided to rebuild the monastery in a new location, lower down the cave. |

foundation, a soil-pot full of olive oil was found. This pot is even today preserved within the monastery along with the stunning icon of the Virgin.
A small path near the monastery leads to a small chapel of the Transfiguration of Jesus. This chapel is built within a cave and the interesting fact is that holy water runs out of a rock near the chapel, throughout the year.
