Holocaust Monument of KalavrytaGeneral information about Kalavryta, Peloponnese Greece: Kalavryta is one of the most historical towns in Greece. Located in the prefecture of Achaia, this town has an important landmark in the history of the Greek war of Independence, when the Greek Revolution was declared there. Also another event marked the history of this town. In 1943, the German troops executed the entire male population of Kalavryta Greece and burned the town. This tragic event is known as the Holocaust of Kalavryta and a touching monument has been raised to remind visitors of this war atrocity.

Today, it is a popular winter destination mainly for the ski centre about 17 km from the city centre. The region around Kalavryta Greece is mountainous with outstanding natural beauty and fresh air. Vouraikos Gorge, extending between Mount Helmos and Mount Erimanthos, is a region of great natural beauty. This gorge is crossed by a cog train that runs a route of outstanding beauty. This cog train departs from Diakofto and arrives in the train station of Kalavryta Greece. Beautiful villages to visit close to Kalavryta Greece include Zachlorou and Planitero, with running water and lots of plane trees.
