Gythio is a historic town of Peloponese, located west of the Laconian Golf. The town is inhabited since the prehistoric years when Gythio was a major commercial centre. Throughout the centuries it has played an important role in the events of Greek history and mainly during the Turkish domination, traces of this tome period can still be seen.
The modern seaside town of Gythio is extremely charming and carries many traditional features from the past. Its island charecter and neoclassical architecture which stands out at the entrance of the port characterize the small town and its inhabitants who are very friendly and warm. Of great interest is Marathonisi islet, opposite Gythio which attracts many visitors for the impressive Tzanetakis castle built in 1829. It is also close to the historical town of Sparti.
