The Phoenicians built a temple there dedicated to Aphrodite, goddess of Love, since this was the place where Paris and Helen spent their first night while fleeing from Sparta to Troy. This impressive tower was built in the 18th Century and today houses the Ethnological Museum of Mani.
Finally, you can visit the Town Hall that was built in 1891 and it now houses the Archaeological Museum. Also up the street is the Maiden School built in 1886. The surrounding area is the modern part of Gythio with apartment buildings and cafes. |
