Today, Gythio Greece is the capital of Mani and a modern coastal area with a commercial harbor. The ferries depart for Kithira, Antikithira and Kissamos Crete in summer. Only 42 km far from Sparti, Gythio is a region with great antithesis where the north side is mostly rocky and its west coast one of the most fertile areas. Kranae is a small island and an important attraction of Gythio Greece, located just across the town. At the end of the 19th century, a narrow pathway was constructed to unite Gythio Greece to this small island. There you can see the chapel of Agios Petros, an impressive tower that hosts the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani and a lighthouse.
Within a distance of 2km from Gythio Greece, you meet Mavrovouni, a long beach that stretches for 5 km covered with thick sand and azure waters. Awarded with a Blue Flag for its cleanness and its organization, Mavrovouni is the most popular beach of Gythio and also a perfect spot for windsurfing, particularly in the afternoons when the wind allows these kinds of water sports. |
