General information

Kranidi village near Ermioni: The town of Kranidi is actually the provincial capital of Ermioni, placed at its centre cape in the southern area of Argolis, Peloponnese. Its name is related to the word Kranaos, meaning rocky trough. In spite of having this role of capital, Kranidi is still is a traditional small town. The area that concentrates most tour facilities is Mandrakia.

Therefore, in Kranidi it is possible to appreciate the details of the traditional Greek life, away from tourism and infrastructure. Kranidi is located south-west of Ermioni, on the north-east Peloponnese. It is a nicely developed area that counts on schools, lyceums, a junior soccer team, a library, churches, banks, a police station, a water tower, a post office, and even a virtual museum, apart from the typically Greek plateia, or town square.

In fact, Kranidi dominates the interior plain of Ermionida, one of the three counties that form the prefecture of Argolida. It is built on a hill, with the port of Kilada village below, which is also very picturesque. Although the inhabitants of Kranidi devote themselves to agriculture and fishing, this town used to have some commercial importance.

There are still some remains from that period. The houses are finely elaborated, with iron ornamentation on their balconies, while the churches constitute another remain in these terms. The streets are still narrow and cobbled; these facts also contribute to the particular charm of Kranidi. Obviously, the trip to Ermioni can be taken advantage of for visiting such a particular place. There is a bus service connecting Ermioni and Kranidi, if you don't want to hire a taxi.

A trip to my roots in Kranidi
Kranidi is just a small village as the other villages of Greece but me I am sentimentally connected to it, as my granny was from there. So, when we visited it this summer for the first time, I was touched to see a mountainous village with so much history for me. Of course, my granny, who migrated young to the US, was not with us, but I remember her telling us stories about her childhood, the games she was playing in the countryside around the village and how hard life was then. Our uncle, who runs a store in Kranidi and insisted on hosting us, also arranged to spend a night in the Monastery of Panagia Pantanassa because he thought this would be more picturesque for us, "a couple of American girls who really need to feel their Greekness" (I believe these were his thoughts this summer, that is why he was so happy to get us there and away :)) Yes, my dear uncle Fotis, you did it, we felt we were truly Greek and we look forward to see you again this summer. Thanks for everything and see you soon!
