The Ancient Ermioni: Ermioni is a small tourist town, located just two hours by hydrofoil from Athens and faces the island Hydra. Belonging to the Peloponnese group of islands, it is quite popular with tourists. Located to the west of this town, is a significant archaeological site, called Ancient Ermioni. This Homeric city is of enormous significance and is considered to be an ancient port hosting mainly Hellenes ships.
Initially the town was built around the acropolis and shifted higher up to hill only during Roman occupation. Even now most of the sea walls built around the ancient city are intact and well preserved. A wonderfully excavated site, this archaeological find tells us a lot about life in that period, architecture style and even more.
According to mythology, ancient Ermioni was believed to be one of the gate ways to Hades. Mentioned by Homer in Iliad, |
