As thousands of people would come to Asklepieion every year to ask for cure, there were festivities to honor god Asclepius. This is why an ancient stadium was built and can be seen even today, and this is also why the famous theatre of Epidaurus was constructed, in order to host festivities, celebrations and various events.
This theatre impresses visitors with the beauty, the symmetry and the exceptional acoustics, that permits to all 15,000 spectators to listen to the slightest detail in the stage, even the drop of a match, regardless of their seat. Today, many performances take place there in summer, as part of the Athens-Epidaurus Festival. Between the theatre and the Asklepieion, there is a small archaeological museum.
However, apart from the archaeological site of Epidaurus Greece, the region is great for peaceful, family holidays. The lovely port village of Ancient Epidaurus offers many tourist facilities and nice beaches to swim. Many other villages and beaches can been explored in the region between Epidaurus Greece and the seaside town of Nafplion. |
